Program will assist localities rebuild from Super Storm Sandy
(Medford, NY) Assemblyman Edward Hennessey (D-Medford) announced that through the New York Rising Community Reconstruction Program, the Village of Mastic Beach and Fire Island will both receive up to $3 million in hurricane relief funding. This will help assist the communities to develop comprehensive rebuilding plans that will be funded by the state and federal government.
“Mastic Beach is an under-served, working class community that was hit hard by Super Storm Sandy,” Assemblyman Hennessey said. “Currently, this community is facing numerous hurdles to rebuild, renew, and move forward. Super Storm Sandy destroyed the sand dune system at Smith Point County Park and now the dunes are in a near-breach condition. If another storm hits before the dunes are replenished, we could lose everything.”
The Community Reconstruction Program will allow these communities to bring together local elected officials, community leaders and residents to develop the comprehensive rebuilding plan, Hennessey noted.
“This program will provide some much needed relief to the communities that need it the most,” Assemblyman Hennessey said. ‘I will continue working with Governor Cuomo to ensure that our communities receive their fair share in order to stabilize, rebuild, and grow,” Hennessey concluded.
