(New York, NY) Assemblyman Edward Hennessey (D-Medford) announced that the New York State Farm Bureau has recognized his support to New York agriculture by naming him to its “Circle of Friends” list, which is released annually.
“Agriculture is an important part of Long Island’s economy,” Assemblyman Hennessey said. “The food produced by our local farmers feed our families every day. I’m committed to supporting these farms and ensuring they have every opportunity to succeed.”
Every year, the Farm Bureau analyzes the voting records of every state legislator, and decides which members exemplify a commitment to helping New York farmers. In his first legislative session, Assemblyman Hennessey supported numerous pro-agriculture bills, including:
- allowing farmers markets to sell local wines (Ch. 355 of 2013);
- funding studies and promoting long-term solutions to sustain farming and food production in the state (A.728);
- distributing regional guides to farms, farmers markets and other agriculturally significant tourist destinations (A.2425);
- establishing the Shop: Pride of New York program to promote locally produced foods (A.3802);
- promoting the purchase of New York farm products by senior centers (A.2700); and
- establishing caps on agricultural assessments, ensuring that property tax rates are sustainable for New York farmers (A.165).
Serving 30,000 members, consisting of farmers and agricultural supporters across the state, the New York Farm Bureau takes a grassroots approach to supporting agricultural policy and serving the interests of New York’s farming community.
“The New York State Farm Bureau has long been the voice for agriculture in this state. I am honored to receive this recognition from such a dedicated group,” Assemblyman Hennessey said. “Although there has been great progress in helping our farmers flourish, there is more we can do. I’ll proudly continue to stand up for New York farmers.”
