(Long Island, NY) Assemblyman Michael Montesano (R,C,I-Glen Head) is co-sponsoring bi-partisan legislation that would prohibit retaliation against employees who report unlawful activity of a public official.
“Individuals who are brave enough to speak up about any potential unlawful activities should not fear retribution,” said Montesano. “This legislation would play a key role in our fight to rid Albany of corruption. The more individuals who report any information regarding wrongdoings, the more ability we have to remove those who abuse their position in exchange for personal gain.”
Under current law, employees are protected if they disclose a violation that could create a danger to public health or safety. This critical piece of legislation (A.1137) would expand the current law which as it will protect those who report bribery, attempted bribery, official misconduct or defrauding of the government.
“This is certainly an issue that cannot go over looked, especially following the recent convictions of the former Speaker and Majority Leader,” said Montesano. “We need all the help we can get to eliminate abuse of power and public trust. Encouraging employees to do the right thing, while also offering them protection is a step in the right direction.”
