(Long Island, NY) Yesterday, Assemblyman Michael Montesano (R,C,I-Glen Head) and his colleagues in the Assembly passed legislation (A.1276) that would provide an incentive for design changes within a residence to allow individuals with limited mobility to reside in their homes.
This bill would enable many senior citizens to remain in the comfort of their own homes by authorizing a credit for design changes that ensures safety and proper functionality. The credit may not exceed $2,750 for the purchase of a new residence or renovation of a current principle residence. Individuals must own the residence in order to receive this credit.
“This legislation provides seniors with the opportunity to restructure their homes to better suit their needs,” said Montesano. “Often time individuals have no other option but to move to a costly assisted living or nursing home. I hope that seniors in need of assistance will take advantage of this incentive so that they can remain safely in the comfort of their own homes and communities.”
In an effort to further help the aging population reside comfortably in their homes, Montesano and his colleagues have introduced bipartisan legislation to establish the Aging in Place Task Force.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, “aging in place” means allowing people to remain in their homes and communities safely, independently and comfortably. This applies to people of all ages, income and ability level.
