(Long Island, NY) Last week, Assemblyman Michael Montesano (R,I,C-Glen Head) joined his colleagues in passing a bill to prohibit the sale and distribution of harmful synthetic drugs in New York.
In recent years, the use of synthetic drugs has become increasingly dangerous and prevalent in many communities. These drugs were created to mimic already illegal substances such as LSD and other hallucinogens. In order to prevent these harmful drugs from further affecting New Yorkers, this legislation (A.627A) would add three types of synthetic drugs to the list of controlled substances.
“It is a frightening reality that many new and dangerous drugs have plagued our communities,” said Montesano. “As a former NYC EMT, police officer and detective, I am aware that many adolescents are constantly looking to experiment with new substances. It is common sense that we take all necessary steps to keep our friends and family safe from exposure to these new synthetic drugs. I am hopeful that with the help of the Senate and governor, we will be successful in banning any type of sale or distribution of these potentially dangerous, chemically processed drugs.”
The bi-partisan legislation, which Montesano co-sponsors, passed the Assembly last week unanimously and has been delivered to the Senate.
