A statement from Assemblyman Michael Montesano (R,C,I-Glen Head)
(Long Island, NY) “Recent comments made by Assembly leadership have left me deeply concerned with the future of ethics reform. Despite two legislative leaders being arrested and put on trial, it would appear as though our new Speaker has few reservations with the status quo.
“Rather than let history repeat itself down the road, we should be learning from the events of the past year. We need to adopt reforms that strengthen current ethics laws, including measures to strip pensions from convicted elected officials, enact term limits and restructure the Assembly rules.
“Unfortunately, it’s no secret that Albany is riddled with ethics violations and corruption charges, and while there has been mention of reform being a priority, as a member of the state Legislative Ethics Commission I fear that personal interest will once again override a meaningful agenda. My colleagues and I will continue to push for measures that would ensure the people of Long Island, and all across New York State, are represented with the honesty and good will they deserve.”
