(Long Island, NY) Assemblyman Michael Montesano (R,I,C-Glen Head) joined his colleagues in passing legislation (A.2615B) that would enforce tougher criminal penalties for those who intentionally cause car accidents. In the past, people have been caught staging accidents to collect insurance coverage.
In addition to drivers knowingly committing insurance fraud, they can also cause serious injury or death to other drivers on the road. This legislation would help eradicate this problem by increasing penalties for convicted offenders.
“It’s hard to believe the lengths some people will go to in order to make money,” said Montesano. “This legislation is essential, not only for the insurance companies, but for all drivers in New York state. With past instances resulting in death, it is crucial that we hold those who knowingly put other people’s lives at risk accountable. I am urging my colleagues in the Senate to take action on this legislation to prevent these potentially dangerous incidents from happening.”
Montesano is a co-sponsor of this bi-partisan legislation, which is commonly known as “Alice’s Law”, after 71-year-old Alice Ross, who was killed as the result of a staged auto accident. Last week the Assembly passed the bill unanimously.
