A statement from Assemblyman Michael Montesano (R,C,I-Glen Head)
(Long Island, NY) “The members of the Common Core Task Force have delivered a welcome assessment that my colleagues and I, as well as most New Yorkers, have understood for almost two years- our education policy, mired in controversy and indecisiveness, is in need of a new direction.
“We need effective, appropriate standards that prepare our children for the challenges of the future. We need teachers whose instruction inspires students to think critically, not simply memorize information for a high-stakes test. Most of all, we need to return control to our local school districts. I am looking forward to a legislative session that will energize our schools.
“I am encouraged that our calls for a new direction have finally been heard, but this is simply the beginning. As we head into this new legislative year, we must keep fighting until these critical proposals come to fruition.”
