(Long Island, NY) A bill co-sponsored by Assemblyman Dean Murray (R,C,I-East Patchogue) to compel NY Rising to issue quarterly reports on pending storm-damage claims has passed the Assembly. NY Rising was established in the wake of Superstorm Sandy to help families recover from the storm’s devastation, however its efficacy has been dubious at best and lacking in accountability. This bill, passed by the Senate as well, would address this problem and is currently awaiting Gov. Cuomo’s signature.
“Thousands of Long Island families were displaced by Superstorm Sandy and the work continues to get their lives back on track,” said Murray. “Nearly 3 years after the storm wreaked havoc upon our area, residents are still seeking answers. Our residents deserve to know what is going on and this legislation is a step in the right direction. Quarterly reports by NY Rising would help coordinate the ongoing recovery efforts and I’m pleased to see my Senate and Assembly colleagues agreed and helped pass this crucial measure.
“NY Rising was started with lofty intentions, but has fallen short of its goals. I urge Gov. Cuomo to do the right thing, provide our residents with the quality service and accountability they deserve and sign this bill into law,” Murray concluded.
