A Statement from Assemblyman Dean Murray (R,C,I-East Patchogue)
(Long Island, NY) “Today, State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman’s office announced an agreement made between his office and daily fantasy sports corporations FanDuel, Inc and DraftKings. The deal unfortunately will suspend the companies’ offering of paid contests in New York, and in return Schneiderman’s office will discontinue its pursuit of litigation against the two companies in lieu of a court decision or change in New York law.
“While I am disappointed that paid contests will be suspended, this simply confirms what I’ve been saying all along: this is not a court matter. The legislature needs to act quickly to ensure that these games are fairly legalized, with proper oversight and regulation.
“In addition, FanDuel, Inc is based in New York and shutting down their paid operations could cost not only players the opportunity to enjoy what they love, but also many jobs right here in our home state. We have the opportunity to rectify this in the budget or move quickly toward a legislative solution. My bill, A.8588, would ensure that these are games of skill, not chance, and immediately resolve any legal discrepancy for them to operate under New York law.
“It is imperative that the Legislature comes to a decision quickly to ensure that jobs are not lost and players can continue to enjoy the games they love.”
