(Long Island, NY) The future of same sex marriage currently sits in the hands of the Supreme Court of the United States, with a decision coming by the end of this month. While we wait for the judgment that could virtually change the platform of marriage equality, we cannot help but think of the ways in which it will legally impact the LGBT community.
“With the hopeful passing of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), same-sex couples will be included in the more than 1000 federal rights and benefits that opposite sex couples enjoy,” said Joseph Milizio, Managing Partner at Vishnick McGovern Milizio. “These are benefits that can only be protected through legal documentation and therefore it is vital for the Supreme Court to recognize the rights and needs of the LGBT community.”
Here at Vishnick McGovern Milizio, our attorneys advocate for and strongly believe in the rights of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered individuals. We understand that the LGBT community has the same concerns, and the same needs, as the larger community. Attorneys Joseph Milizio, Joseph Trotti and EJ Thorsen from Vishnick McGovern Milizio are well versed in the legal issues that affect the gay community and the disparate treatment of the LGBT community, and have spoken before a number of professional and general interest audiences on the topic of “LGBT and the Law.”
Mr. Milizio is extremely knowledgeable about the legal issues that affect the LGBT community. In fact, Mr. Milizio is one of Long Island’s leading advocates for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community, and spearheads the Gay and Lesbian Representation Practice Group at Vishnick McGovern Milizio LLP. This practice group offers legal counsel and representation on key issues in the LGBT community, including: domestic partnership matters; co-owner agreements; spousal rights and obligations; adoptions; life and estate planning; employment law/discrimination; and marital and domestic disputes.
Together, Mr. Milizio, Mr. Trotti and Ms. Thorsen produced the short documentary Left Out In America: Legislating Love, Life and the LGBT. Visit http://www.lgbt-vmmlegal.com for more information.
