(Long Island, NY) County Executive Steve Bellone, Legislator Kate Browning and representatives from the Nature Conservancy will be on hand for the commencement of the demolition of the Kramer property in Mastic Beach.
Suffolk County has closed on the long awaited Kramer acquisition in the wetlands of the Village of Mastic Beach. The parcel, though small, is a significant acquisition in partnership with The Nature Conservancy to preserve property in flood zone areas and return them to their natural habitat and preserve the uplands. The funding for the acquisition was secured through the Suffolk County 1/4% Drinking Water Protection Fund.
Legislator Kate Browning, with the support of County Executive Bellone, secured additional funding as part of the 2013 Capital Program in the amount of $80,000 in Suffolk County Serial Bonds required to demolish the on-site structure located on the property. Once demolished, the property will be used for passive recreational use under the Suffolk County Park Department of Parks.
The property is located on the Sheep Pen Creek Peninsula which is the area targeted by Suffolk County and the Natural Resources Conservation Services (NRCS) for land acquisition and preservation. Suffolk County is currently applying to NRCS for a grant to acquire and preserve additional parcels in Mastic Beach.
