County has collected over twelve hundred packs of cigarettes confiscated in attempted sales to minors – over seventeen thousand county residents served through County’s smoking cessation program
(Long Island, NY) County Executive Steve Bellone will joined by Legislator William Spencer, Dr. Tomarken, Commissioner of Suffolk County Department of Health, and the American Cancer Society to highlight the County’s efforts in reducing the smoking population in Suffolk County.
The Great American Smokeout occurs every year, on the third Thursday of November, where smokers across the nation take part in activities offered by the American Cancer Society. The Great American Smokeout day challenges people to stop using tobacco and helps people become informed about the many tools they can use to help them quit.
Suffolk County has been a trailblazer in promoting the health and well-being of its residents and nowhere is that more evident than in the County’s tobacco control efforts. Not only are the County’s clean indoor air laws among the strictest in the nation, Suffolk County was one of the first municipalities in the nation to ban the sale of tobacco to those under the age of 19 in 2005 and age 21 this past year.
