Statement from Dan Gross, President, The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence
“For the past 18 years the gun violence issue has had no greater champion in Congress than Rep. Carolyn McCarthy. Over that time she has fought tirelessly and courageously on behalf of her constituents and the American people to make this the safer nation we all want and deserve.
I first met Carolyn McCarthy 17 years ago when she visited my family in the hospital while my brother was still in a coma after having been shot. She did not come to talk about politics and she never notified the press. We were not even her constituents. She came to offer the love and support of a wife and mother who had been through something similar. That is who Carolyn McCarthy is as a person and as a leader.
To all of us who have experienced the heartbreak of gun violence in our own lives, Carolyn McCarthy is a beacon of inspiration and hope – an example of the potential that exists to turn terrible tragedy into real and lasting change.”
