EEG test provides scientific means to help form a more accurate ADHD diagnosis
(Long Island, NY) The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced it has approved the first brain-wave test to help diagnose Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in children by measuring brain waves via an electroencephalogram (EEG). According to FDA Office of Device Evaluations Director Christy Foreman, the protocol will help healthcare providers more accurately determine whether ADHD is the cause of a particular behavioral problem.
“Brain-wave testing has been used by many healthcare providers throughout the world for over 30 years,” said Dr. Michael Shwartzstein co-owner of Back to Life Chiropractic, a BrainCore of NY partner. “In addition to identifying symptoms, brain-wave testing also provides the basis for neurofeedback therapy which helps retrain abnormal brain-wave patterns associated with ADHD symptoms. Neurofeedback is endorsed by the American Academy of Pediatrics as a Level One, best support treatment for ADHD – as effective as medication but without dangerous side effects. FDA’s validation of EEG brain-wave testing offers providers an objective, scientific basis for evaluating attention disorders that will better assist in forming a more accurate diagnosis than using traditional methods alone.”
According to BrainCore of NY partner and co-owner of New Life Wellness Center Dr. W. Brent Reynolds, “EEG brain-wave testing is used at the outset of a neurofeedback therapy program to identify abnormal brain-wave patterns that may be related to focus and attention issues. We use the EEG data to design a neurofeedback brain training program that teaches children how to better regulate their brain-wave patterns. We find that when a child learns how to do this, many of the issues improve. They become calmer, more focused and better able to concentrate. Neurofeedback has also been shown in documented studies, as well as in our own patient experience, to be effective in helping other health conditions such as insomnia, anxiety, chronic pain, headaches and stress disorders. We are pleased with the FDA’s stamp of approval for the EEG test and are hopeful that this endorsement will bring further awareness of EEG not only as an objective test for aiding in diagnosis, but also for neurofeedback brain-wave training as a non-drug option to improve brain function.”
