Exhibit by Joanne Dumas Celebrates Beauty of Nation’s Iconic Waterway
(BETHPAGE, N.Y.) This summer, the Briarcliffe College Gallery presents SHIMMER, an exhibition of recent digital works by local Long Island artist, Joanne Dumas, curated by Beth Giacummo. The Gallery, which is located on campus, strives to showcase local artists and serve as an inspiration to instructors, staff and students.
The exhibition, on display from June 20 to Sept. 20 highlights the forms created by the water’s movement and light as it plays on the Mississippi River. The Gallery will host a reception, featuring Dumas, to celebrate the exhibition and beginning of a new school year Thursday, Sept. 19, from 6:30 – 8 p.m. Both the exhibition and reception are free and open to the public.
“We encourage our students to pursue a well-rounded education, and exhibits like SHIMMER help educate and inspire them in addition to their academic coursework,” said Briarcliffe College President Dr. George Santiago. “Having the work of Ms. Dumas on display at our campus is an asset to both students and the local community.”
“The water images in this exhibit developed from my love of the clean bodies of water in our Long Island environment,” Dumas said. “I decided to explore aspects of the waters of the Mississippi River, which has had dramatic effects for millennium. What fascinated me were the formations that had graceful shapes of water frozen in time, colors from trapped minerals as well as shadows and tones that shimmer and change in the moving daylight.”
The Briarcliffe College Gallery is located at 1055 Stewart Ave, Bethpage, New York. The Gallery is located in the school’s “Islip” hallway and will be open during building hours, Monday through Thursday, 8:30 a.m. – 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday, 8:30 a.m. – 2 p.m. Anyone with questions regarding the exhibit or event is encouraged to contact Beth Giacummo, the Gallery’s Chief Curator at (516) 708-4955.
