Railroad workers praise Throne-Holst’s progressive record fighting to invest in public transportation and services for Long Island seniors
(Long Island, NY) Today, Democratic candidate for New York’s 1st Congressional District Anna Throne-Holst was endorsed by the Brotherhood of Railroad Signalmen Local 56. In its endorsement, the railroadworkers’ union, which represents about 500 LIRR employees, cited Throne-Holst’s commitment to supporting Long Island’s public transportation network and protecting Social Security and Medicare for future generations.
“We’re pleased to announce our support for Democratic candidate Anna Throne-Holst in her campaign to represent Suffolk County in Congress,” said Chris Natale from the Brotherhood of Railroad Signalmen Local 56. “Anna has a truly progressive record as Southampton Town Supervisor when she stood up to Republicans and was able to invest in public transportation and care for Long Island seniors without raising taxes on working families. She’ll stand up to right wing Republicans in Congress who try to gut funding for the LIRR, privatize Social Security or dismantle Medicare and she’ll get things done for working people.”
“I’m honored to have the support of Long Island’s railroad workers, who work tirelessly to keep our trains safe and our public transportation system moving,” said Anna Throne-Holst. “Recently a report was released showing that the LIRR needs upgrades, not cuts, to better serve Long Island families and businesses and handle major storms that continue to hit our communities. I’ll always fight to invest in our public transportation system and the LIRR, which makes up the backbone of Long Island’s economy. In Congress, I’ll work to grow opportunities for working families and work to ensure Social Security and Medicare are there for our seniors.”
Recently, the LIRR released a report showing upgrades and new investments are needed to handle the impact of major storms Long Island continues to face. See the report here.
News of the railroad workers’ endorsement follows endorsements from a number of other unions, progressive organizations and local and national Democrats rallying around Anna Throne-Holst’s campaign. She’s been endorsed by the New York State Council of Machinists, Heat and Frost Insulators Local 12, the Southampton Town Patrollmen’s Benevolent Association, EMILY’s List, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, Tim Bishop and many others.
A recent poll reported on by the NY State of Politics had Anna Throne-Holst leading her primary opponent by a double-digit margin, 36 to 25 percent. Furthermore, the poll found that when one zeroes in on “high frequency” voters most likely to turn out in the primary election this June, Throne-Holst’s lead grows to a 48 to 22 percent lead.
