(Long Island, NY) The defendants facing criminal charges for their roles in the fatal crash early Sunday on the Southern State Parkway that killed a Queens father and his two children are scheduled to appear in first district court in Central Islip today, Friday, July 17.
Oniel Sharpe Jr., the driver who is charged with DWI and leaving the scene of a fatal accident, is free after posting $500,000 bond yesterday; his codefendant Demetri A. Stewart remains incarcerated in lieu of $100,000 cash bail or $200,000 bond. Stewart is charged with leaving the scene of a fatal accident, hindering prosecution and criminal facilitation.

The investigation of the crash by the Vehicular Crimes Bureau of the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office and New York State Police is ongoing.

Today’s appearance will be in courtroom D-11. The court calendar will be called at 9:30 am.
The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty. Defendants are entitled to a fair trial with the burden on the prosecution to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
