(Long Island, NY) The Suffolk County Legislature on June 2 supported two resolutions sponsored by Deputy Presiding Officer Jay Schneiderman (I-Hampton Bays) authorizing the donation of surplus county para-transit buses to St. Michaels Windmill Housing Development Fund Corporation (HDFC) and Camp Soulgrow at fair market value.
Suffolk County recently updated its’ fleet of para transit and SCAT vehicles. Around a dozen vehicles were retired from service due to excessive mileage. These buses will likely be declared surplus and auctioned at a later date. However, two of the vehicles will not go through the auction process and rather be sold at fair market prices to these not-for-profits.
“Not-for-profits on the East End are in dire need for additional transportation resources,” said Legislator Schneiderman. “These buses will provide two great community organizations the ability to safely transport members to events and workshops.”
The St. Michaels Windmill HDFC is a not-for-profit housing complex for low-income senior citizens. St. Michael’s mission is to provide safe, clean affordable housing. Camp Soulgrow is a not for profit organization that offers creative learning experiences and adventures for diverse kids to inspire them and develop confidence to follow their inner dreams by utilizing community artists and local businesses as their mentors.
“St. Michaels Housing has just learned it will be receiving a bus through Suffolk County,” said manager Kathy Byrnes. “This bus will enable us to transport our senior population to programs and activities that they otherwise would not be able to attend. Thank you Legislator Schneiderman for providing us with this wonderful gift.”
“I would like to thank Legislator Schneiderman for all his efforts in securing this bus for Camp Soulgrow,” said executive director London Rosiere. “This will now give us the opportunity to transport our kids safely throughout Montauk.”
