Local Groups to Release New State-Specific Report at Sept. 25th Event on Projected Health and Educational Benefits of Proposal in New York
(New York, NY) Advocacy groups focused on early education and public health will host an event in New York on Wednesday to release the results of a new report showing the projected benefits nationwide and in New York of President Obama’s proposal to expand early childhood education, funded with an increase in federal tobacco taxes. The event will feature early education advocates representing Children’s Defense Fund-New York, United Neighborhood Houses, Center for Children’s Initiatives and tobacco control advocates representing the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, American Heart Association and the American Lung Association of the Northeast
President Obama proposed in his fiscal year 2014 budget to expand federal funding for early education programs, paid for with a 94-cent per pack increase in the federal cigarette tax and a proportional increase in the federal tax on other tobacco products. Such an increase would be a win-win for children as less than half of four-year-olds are currently enrolled in public preschool programs, many of which are not high quality, and tobacco tax increases have been proven to prevent kids from starting to smoke. Twelve advocacy groups that focus on early education and tobacco control will release a national report on Wednesday, Sept. 25 on the national and state-by-state educational and health benefits of the President’s proposal.
