After three weeks in the position, Shenole Latimer comments: “One of the things that impressed me right from the start is how dedicated the staff and faculty are to what they do. The second thing that impressed me was how quickly they accepted me as part of our “family away from home”. The feeling of belonging and knowing that there is a greater good that we are all pulling together to achieve really adds to my excitement of being the new Education Director.”
Founded in 1995 as a division of East End Arts, the East End Arts School offers year-round group and individual instruction in music, visual art and theater, as well as summer arts camps for approximately 500 students each year, from early childhood to senior. East End Arts believes, and educational studies have concluded, that integrating arts into the broad educational curriculum encourages learning in all academic areas. The arts are a vital part of a child’s development and open new doors to learning for those who are beyond their formal education years. More about Shenole Latimer, Education Director, East End Arts
Shenole Latimer decided to pursue music professionally in 1998 after doing some soul searching with regards to continuing his education at Stony Brook University to become a Marine Biologist. Since that time he has collected a string of accomplishments that have helped to define an impressive career in the music industry, including earning an endorsement contract with Vandoren, a major musical instrument accessories company, performing a string of successfully self-produced concerts within the New York Tri-State region, and becoming the highest grossing artist (for any music genre) for the Dortmund, Germany-based record label Tierra Records in just a three year time period.
Shenole has been involved with the education sector for over 10 years. Realizing the opportunity he had to both entertain and educate his audiences, in 2002 Latimer created a program called “What’s All That Jazz About?” designed to introduce people of all ages to Jazz and how to appreciate it. Over the years, his program became so popular that he found himself touring nationally with it, including in economically challenged regions that other performers would often avoid.
Shenole’s first experience with East End Arts was just prior to the creation of the Jazz on the Vine concert series over six years ago, when he participated in a forum of panelists discussing how artists can make a living with their art, which East End Arts was co-hosting. Further participation with East End Arts sponsored events would eventually lead to a strong relationship with the organization and an invitation to apply for the newly available position of Education Director in June 2013.
