(Long Island, NY) Gov. Cuomo will order New York regulators to ensure that utility companies cut carbon emissions by forcing the state’s energy providers to produce half of their total power from renewable sources by 2030, according to a report. The governor wants to force utility companies to provide 50 percent of customers’ power from solar, wind, hydroelectric or other renewable sources in 15 years.
Heather Leibowitz, Director of Environment New York, issues the following statement:
“This past summer Governor Andrew Cuomo announced an ambitious plan to curb New York State’s carbon emissions by 40 percent by doubling the amount of power it gets from renewable energy; like wind and solar to 50 percent, by 2030.
“By moving forward with binding requirements at the New York Public Service Commission, Governor Cuomo makes it much more likely that New York can ramp up solar and onshore and offshore wind, to meet the Empire State’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions. In the weeks leading up to the global climate negotiations in Paris, enforceable commitments that phase out coal are essential.
“Governor Cuomo’s clean energy plan put New York right where it should be—at the front of the pack. We are now seeing the plan become a reality and look forward to working with Governor Cuomo’s office to ensure we continue on this track.”
