Fair Media Council Folio Award Winners Announced
(Long Island, N.Y.) Following a luncheon keynote address by Dateline NBC correspondent Chris Hansen, best known for his work on “To Catch a Predator,” the Fair Media Council presented its annual Folio Awards to the New York metro area news media and social media. With more than 500 people in attendance at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury, N.Y., a total of 39 awards were presented.
Multiple award winners included WSHU, for radio reports ranging from Latino hate crimes to foreclosure news; FOX5, which won for reports that included ponzi scheme coverage and botched medical procedures; Long Island Press, for in-depth coverage of local water issues and school budgets and Long Island Business News, for exclusive coverage of Agape World. First time Folio Award winners included WPHC, Nassau Community College’s radio station, Verizon’s FIOS1 and NYIT Magazine.
“The Folio Awards signify the highest of honors in news and social media, because it is the public who judges the work for relevance to the community,” said Jaci Clement, executive director of the Fair Media Council. “Despite monumental changes happening within the news industry, stories of substance and stories that matter are still being told. Those are the stories that earn Folios.”
With the introduction of social media categories, businesses could now participate in the Folio Award program. Winners included St. Joseph’s College, North Shore-LIJ Health System, Adelphi University, Bedell Cellars and Long Island Restaurant Week. A complete list of winners is below.
Hansen joined NBC in 1993, as a correspondent for “Now with Tom Brokaw and Katie Couric.” In 2004, he began his breakthrough investigative reporting on online sexual predators. Eleven dramatic hidden camera investigations exposed over 250 men who targeted teenagers over the Internet. In April 2007, he reported in “To Catch an ID Thief,” an unprecedented investigation into the massive billion-dollar epidemic of identity theft. He has earned seven Emmy Awards, four Edward Murrow awards, three Clarion awards, the Overseas Press club award, an IRE, the National Press Club Award and the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists Award, among others.
Cohosting the event is the CBS2 anchor team, Chris Wragge and Kristine Johnson. Serving as Folio Award presenters included a host of on-air television talent, including WPIX’s Jim Watkins, ABC7’s Sarah Wallace, My9’s Harry Martin, FOX5’s Rosanna Scotto and Greg Kelly, NBC4’s Lynda Baquero and Michael Gargiulo, and WNJU Telemundo’s Andrea Romero and Ramon Zayas. Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano makes his debut as a Folio Award presenter. WALK Radio’s Patrick Shea is this year’s Folio announcer. The event is taped for broadcast to 5 million viewers by WVVH-TV, Hamptons Television, the official television station of FMC’s Folio Awards.
The Fair Media Council’s annual awards luncheon attracts more than 600 business, community and media leaders. The Fair Media Council is a 501c not-for-profit organization that advocates for quality local news coverage and educates the public to get media savvy.
Businesses and nonprofit organizations are eligible to become members of FMC. Details are available at www.fairmediacouncil.org.
