Starting January 19th in Great Neck at Gold Coast Arts Center; Only Multi-Discipline Arts School in Nassau County Truly has Something for Everyone, Now called Gold Coast Arts Center
(Great Neck, NY) The Gold Coast Art Center is pleased to announce Jude Amsel as the new gallery director. Jude brings to the position her many years of experience as artist and educator. As lead teacher in the art center’s ceramics program and instructor in the outreach program, as well as a long standing member of the Art Center board, she will continue her work as an advocate for the arts.
In her position as art center educator, Jude has also taught in Europe. Her recent travels have connected her to the French artist Veronique Barrillot, a muralist from Dijon, France. With Jude’s help, Veronique’s dream to paint a mural in New York was realized this summer at 5 Ptz, a graffiti Mecca in Long Island City. During her stay she also created a mural for the entrance to the art center. Jude Amsels recent interest in urban art brings us to the subject of her curatorial debut, “Wall Works”.
Since it’s appearance on city walls and subway cars in the 1970s, the sub-culture of graffiti and street art has been rapidly moving into the realm of mainstream art. Major museum and gallery exhibitions of many street artists such as, Keith Haring, Jean Michel Basquiat, Shepard Fairey and Banksy point to a growing interest in the art form.
“Wall Works” will be at the Gold Coast Art Center from January 19, through March 2, 2014, opening reception Sunday, January 19 from 3-5pm.
