(Long Island, NY) Gallery North, in Setauket, New York, is celebrating its fiftieth year. On this anniversary, we remember Virginia and Daniel Fuller who formed a private corporation to open an art gallery on Long Island. The founders rented a 1860s farmhouse in which to show the art. Gallery North started as an elite endeavor to show the community the art they loved. Virginia and her friend Sally Plumb became Associate Directors when Gallery North opened its doors on Sunday, September 5th, with a show of art world notables who were living and painting on the East End of Long Island.
For the first ten years, Gallery North was technically a business, but it also became a community institution, attracting a cadre of devoted art lovers and volunteers. Ten years later, Gallery North became a not-for-profit gallery with a formal mission statement: “…to provide the community with education, support, awareness, appreciation and understanding of contemporary arts and crafts, in particular those of the Long Island region.” Today, thanks to generous supporters and patrons, Gallery North continues to showcase the artists of Long Island and the nearby regions.
