The International Living Classroom is Long Island’s First International Residency Program
(Bethpage, N.Y) Last week, the Briarcliffe College Art Gallery opened its doors to its first international exhibition – The International Living Classroom. Presented in collaboration with the Islip Art Museum and D. Fleiss & East West Artists International (DFEWA), the gallery represents Long Island’s first international residency program and features a dozen artists from countries including Japan, Poland, Romania, Germany, Turkey and Spain. The new exhibition will be open to the public from Oct. 2 to Nov. 8, 2013, with a special opening reception honoring the artists Wednesday, Oct. 2 from 3:30 – 6 p.m.
The gallery is the principal element in the Fleiss–Giacummo–McAvoy, NY Contemporary Art Symposium 2013, a movement to improve the cultural exchange between artists and collaborating communities. During the symposium the campus will host a series of events that gives the community, along with local artists and students, a chance to learn more about this cultural exchange. Through the affiliated program, “A Living Classroom,” Briarcliffe students will have the opportunity to talk with the artists and view hands-on demonstrations.
“Hosting the International Living Classroom exhibition is another way that Briarcliffe College is able to support the arts on Long Island,” said Professor Beth Giacummo, Briarcliffe College Gallery Chief Curator and full-time faculty member. “The partnership with the D. Fleiss & East West Artists International Association not only benefits our students, but it provides education and inspiration to the participating artists and the broader community.”
This exhibition was inspired by D. Fleiss & East West Artists International, whose mission is to establish a working cooperation to encourage and improve the cultural exchange between outstanding artists of varying backgrounds from eastern and western countries. During the Briarcliffe College exhibition, artists will be provided housing, studio space, all meals, trips to cultural centers, and select art supplies at no cost to them through the generous donations of local community organizations. Lifting these financial burdens provides the opportunity for the artists to explore their creativity with themselves and others.
The Briarcliffe College Gallery is located at 1055 Stewart Ave, Bethpage, New York. The Gallery is located in the school’s “Islip” hallway and will be open during building hours, Monday through Thursday, 8:30 a.m. – 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday, 8:30 a.m. – 2 p.m. Anyone with questions regarding the exhibit or event is encouraged to contact Beth Giacummo, the Gallery’s Chief Curator at (631) 806-472
