Presiding Officer to Organize Summit on Violence
(Long Island, NY) In the wake of the two shootings in North Amityville Thursday, July 16, Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory today called for Suffolk County Police Commissioner Edward Webber to deploy additional officers to the area. He is also calling a summit with county and town officials, law enforcement agents and community leaders to address ongoing efforts to stem violence and to craft a targeted plan for moving forward to make our neighborhoods safe.
“We must all do more to take back our communities,” Presiding Officer Gregory said. “Given the shootings in North Amityville on Thursday and in Wyandanch last month, we must find the courage to report anything we know, and we must take the initiative to step up patrols and put more cops on the ground. The Legislature will work closely with the Suffolk County Police Commissioner and County Executive in our continued efforts to keep our streets protected and our families safe.
“We must be proactive – not reactive – in our mission to combat violent crime, and bringing together community stakeholders and officials is critical for that effort. All involved parties deserve a seat at the table as we work together to strategize a plan for ending violent crime in Suffolk County,” Presiding Officer Gregory continued.
Anyone with information on Thursday, July 16’s shootings is encouraged to call detectives at 631-854-8152 or to leave an anonymous tip at 1-800-220-TIPS.
