Energy Efficient New Home Design To be Built by Habitat for Humanity in Roosevelt
(Long Island, NY) Habitat for Humanity of Nassau County, (HFHNC) and Spector Group along with a host of celebrity judges selected an energy efficient home design to be the new model built by HFHNC volunteers, said Michael Pfeiffer, Executive Director of HFHNC. The winning submission was selected on June 25 and is titled ‘Habitat Haus.’
The ‘Habitat Haus’ features efficient systems and sustainable design elements without sacrificing modern comforts and amenities. ‘Habitat Haus’ is a small three bedroom home designed to maximize daylight and energy use. It features elements such as Solar panels, a Rain water filtration / collection system, a thermal mass wall, and a clear story window for convective cooling. Kate Mulry a Spector Group architect, who resides in Lindenhurst designed ‘Habitat Haus.’

The Spector Group, Long Island’s leading architectural design firm, and HFHNC have formed an alliance to create an innovative, affordable, and energy efficient design for future Habitat/Nassau homes. (See winning design, attached.) Spector created an intra-design competition to celebrate the firm’s 50th anniversary. Its architectural staff was invited to submit designs for a residence that embodies the fundamental tenets of the Habitat for Humanity mission, as well Spector’s design philosophy and expertise.
“This submission was selected primarily due to the context of the area. Our recent family selected for a home in Roosevelt spoke to that in the deliberations as well as County Executive, Edward Mangano. It was highly thought that the home should fit in with the design of the area and while it will stand out due to its beauty, the design will still fit into the overall feel of the neighborhood,” said Pfeiffer . He and a panel of celebrity judges selected ‘Habitat Hous’ from a group of five submissions. The first home with this design will be built in Roosevelt later this year, according to Pfeiffer.

I, my father and the entire company are enormously proud to be associated with this effort.”
