(Long Island, NY) “Every day, thousands of people on Long Island go hungry,” said Senator Kemp Hannon (R-Nassau). “Residents can help me help Long Islanders who are in need of food by stopping by the Stop & Shop Supermarket at 3750 Hempstead Turnpike in Levittown between 9:30 am and 2:00 pm on April 11, 2014 to donate any non-perishable food items, which my office will deliver to Island Harvest.”
Island Harvest is the largest hunger relief organization on Long Island. Among those recipients are child care centers, senior citizen programs, emergency food pantries, soup kitchens, temporary housing for families in transition, and community residences for people with mental disabilities or chronic illness.
“Issues related to hunger affect people in every community, especially on Long Island,” said Hannon. “In the fight to stamp out hunger, food banks like Island Harvest play a key role by securing donations of food to distribute back to our community.”
Members of Hannon’s staff will man two locations at the entrances and exits to the Stop & Shop, allowing for easy donations of non-perishable food items. Suggested items include canned vegetables, meats, fish or fruits, soups, sauces, pasta, cereals, dry milk, baby formula, personal care or personal hygiene items and nutritional beverages.
“110,000 children on Long Island are hungry or at risk of hunger,” said Hannon. Please join me to help fight hunger in our community. I hope you’ll stop by and donate a few cans of food or other non-perishable items on April 11th.”
