(Valley Stream, NY) In a blatant attempt to bypass democracy the Hempstead Town Board lead by Supervisor Murray on Tuesday (September 3, 2013) appointed Republican Candidate Nasrin Ahmad to the Hempstead Town Clerk position.
In May the Republican Party nominated Ahmad to be their candidate for the 2013 election cycle.
“This is a gross misuse of power by Supervisor Murray and the Republican controlled Town Board to declare the Republican nominee Ahmad the Clerk before the people have had an opportunity to make their decision,” stated Bob Young, Town of Hempstead Democratic Committee First Deputy Leader. “First Deputy Town Clerk, Phil Guarnieri, who is not a political candidate is serving as acting clerk and therefore there was no need, other than political, to appoint Ahman.”
Town Republicans have set a precedent by bypassing democracy when they appointed Kate Murray to supervisor (a position she has held for ten years) after then Supervisor Rich Guardino resigned in 2013, and Councilmembers Santino and Ambtosino were also appointed nearing their election time.
“The appointment of Ahmad makes her an illegitimate Town Clerk. This appoint allows the Republican Town Clerk Candidate to campaign as the incumbent with only two months before the election. This means Mrs. Ahmad can campaign on the taxpayer dime as she would be featured in Town mailings, photos, and be given opportunities to speak at none campaign stops such as local fairs,” concluded Young.
