(Long Island, NY) Suffolk County Police have arrested a home health aide for stealing jewelry from a patient she was caring for during the past month.
Suffolk County Police Sixth Squad detectives initiated an investigation on May 9 when a 74-year-old Coram woman reported numerous pieces of jewelry, valued at more than $3,000, had been stolen from her home between May 1 and May 9.

Detectives arrested Melissa Acevedo, who was working for the victim as a home health aide, and charged her with Grand Larceny 3rd Degree. Acevedo was employed by Visiting Nurse Service & Hospice of Suffolk County.
Acevedo, 27, of Selden, is scheduled to be arraigned today at First District Court in Central Islip.
The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty. Defendants are entitled to a fair trial with the burden on the prosecution to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
