(Long Island, NY) After agreeing to only one debate with Nassau County Comptroller George Maragos, as was the case four years ago, Howard Weitzman desperately attempted to set up a last minute debate on News 12 which is owned by Cablevision who donated over $200,000 to the top of the ticket for the Democrats. In early September Nassau County Comptroller George Maragos was told in the attached letter that News 12 would only interview the candidates for comptroller individually and place the interviews “on demand” on channel 612.
Excerpt from letter from News 12, which is owned by cablevision who donated over $200,000 to the top of the ticket for the democrats: “In lieu of traditional debates, these recorded interviews offer voters the opportunity to select the issues that matter most to them, and view them at their convenience on the web and on Optimum channel 612. Please see the attached schedule, which lists your interview date and time.
Maragos taped his interview with News 12 and also had a debate with Weitzman on Oct 10th which was moderated by the League of Women Voters. The link to the debate is included below.
“Having been trounced at the first agreed to debate with the League of Women Voters, where Mr. Weitzman was incoherent and without facts, he now wants a rematch to redeem himself,” Comptroller Maragos said. “He should recall that four years ago he refused to any on-air debates, including on News 12. Now the former comptroller is putting out what Newsday called ‘a strongly negative ad’ which is full of lies and claiming that I am ducking debates that were never agreed to. Weitzman’s attempts to redeem himself by making malicious and baseless allegations cannot divert attention from his shameful record of complicity with Suozzi in raising property taxes by 23%.”
