(Long Island, NY) New York City Councilman Ruben Wills (28th District) and Merrick Academy Charter School Board President Gerald Karikari will join hundreds of New York City school children, along with former New York Knicks teammates and family members of Knicks legend Anthony Mason in dedicating the school’s basketball courts in honor of the Queens sports hero and NBA star. The dedication ceremony and news conference will take place on Wednesday May 20, 2015 at 12:30 p.m. at Merrick Academy in Springfield Gardens, Queens, NY. Former New York Knicks teammates John Starks and Charles Smith and family including Anthony Mason Jr. will honor the hometown hero at a dedication ceremony.
Born and raised in Springfield Gardens, Anthony Mason died of a tragic heart attack at the age of 48 in February 2015. He was active in local, Queens community groups and was known as the “Springfield Gardens Kid” growing up in that neighborhood where he became one of the greatest players to come out of Southeast Queens.
