(Long Island, NY) Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter, and Islip Town Councilman Steve Flotteron, along with officials from the “Where Angels Play Foundation,” will be unveiling a student built lending library at a playground dedicated to Sandy Hook victim Madeleine Hsu, 6, who was known for having a love of books and reading.
Students from the Paul J. Bellew Elementary School, many of whom are the same age of Madeline Hsu, raised hundreds of dollars for the lending library by starting their own recycling program and then collaborated with fellow upper class-men to build the library from scratch. The “little free library” is a spot where books are put out for anyone who wants to read them with no costs, no sign-outs and no strings attached. The event follows a daylong cleanup of the park by hundreds of community volunteers and town organizations.
The tragic Sandy Hook Elementary School Shooting occurred on December 12, 2014 and was the deadliest mass shooting to ever take place in an primary school. 20 children and six educators were tragically gunned down on that fateful day.
