Junior League’s First Step Helps Long Island Women Re-enter the Workforce and Gain Independence
(Roslyn, N.Y.) The Junior League of Long Island (JLLI), a nonprofit organization of women volunteers, is asking Long Islanders to donate business-appropriate apparel and accessories for its BiAnnual First Step Program, which provides professional attire to local women transitioning into the workforce.
Donations of new and gently-used suits, dresses, shoes, briefcases and appropriate accessories will be accepted at the JLLI headquarters in Roslyn Village now through the end of October.
Now in its seventh year, First Step helps Long Island women in transitional homes re-enter the work force by taking the “first step” in providing free professional clothing for interviews and beyond. Participants are referred from local social service agencies, shelters, and food pantries to attend the event.
Junior League members personally assist attendees with selecting appropriate clothing for their career. A session on interviewing, resume writing and networking will also be provided. Transportation, lunch, and child care will be offered to all participants for the day at no cost.
“The right outfit can have a huge impact on a woman’s confidence as she prepares for her first interview on her way to financial independence. Donations of business attire in all sizes and styles are welcome and will make a tremendous difference in helping boost the self-esteem of these women,” said Tyran Sullivan, President of The Junior League of Long Island. “Since its foundation, the Junior League of Long Island has been at the forefront of identifying and fulfilling community needs. The Junior League has been the driving force behind the kinds of initiatives and institutions that make our community a healthier, more vital place to live.”
Donations are tax deductible and all styles and sizes are appreciated. The JLLI Thrift Shop is located at 1395 Old Northern Blvd., Roslyn. Please visit www.jlli.org for Thrift Shop hours. First Step donations may also be deposited in the Thrift Shop’s 24-hour donation bin. Please clearly mark donations for “First Step Program” upon leaving them at the Thrift Store or in the donation bin.
