(Lindenhurst, NY) The Kiwanis Club of Lindenhurst will host its 55th annual Steak Fry on Thursday August 8th from 12 noon to 8pm at Fireman’s Memorial Park. Hosting this year’s event will be Applebees of Lindenhurst who will be cooking and serving their delicious food, said Jo Ann Boettcher, chairperson of the event.
“Every cent that is collected at the steak fry goes to the scholarship fund,” Boettcher said.
This year the Kiwanis Club awarded $11,000 in scholarship money to five seniors at Lindenhurst High School. Those students were Corey Bissner, Paul Plevritis, Olivia Sztanga, Carline Rakus-Wojciechowski, and Anthony Giambrone. “These awards were made possible out of the efforts of our 54th Annual Steak Fry held last August.” Boettcher added.

Jo Ann Boettcher, chairperson of the event went on to tell LongIslandExchange.com’s Dana Klosner that “Since the inception of the scholarship program in 1961, the Kiwanis Club of Lindenhurst has awarded a total of $398,400 in scholarships to 241 recipients. These scholarships are often instrumental in securing a quality education for certain students who otherwise may not have been able to properly pursue their scholastic and professional careers due to extenuating circumstances.”
The scholarship is open to any Lindenhurst resident not only high school students. The scholarship is given based on the student’s scholastic aptitude, community service, family income and how many siblings the family is supporting. The funding for the awards comes principally from one of our major events, our annual Steak Fry. Over the past years, during each of our Steak Fry events, the public enjoyed over 1,200 steaks, several hundred hamburgers and breasts of chicken. Each comes complete with a delicious ear of fresh corn, Caesar salad, potato salad, rolls and cake.
“The scholarships are made possible from the sale of raffle tickets sold at the Steak Fry. There are over 100 prizes this year including a big screen TV, a barbeque, a GPS, an iPad a Wii, and two bicycles. The Kiwanis Club and the Key Club – the junior Kiwanis club – members have enjoyed every minute of putting this year’s event together,” Boettcher said.
“People can come for lunch and stay for dinner. There is also a take-out service. A steak or chicken dinner is $12 and a hamburger dinner is $7. The success of this event allows the scholarship committee of the Kiwanis Club of Lindenhurst the ability to award substantial scholarship monies to the successful candidates of the High School graduating class,” Boettcher added. “As you can see, we’re serving our community more and more each and every year.”
