(Long Island, NY) Two weeks away from the state budget deadline, several Long Island advocacy organizations will hold a community forum regarding Senate Majority Leader Flanagan’s reluctance to meet with constituents. The Long Island Transgender Advocacy Coalition will join with the L.I. DREAM Coalition, the Bus Riders Union, SEPA Mujer, and the Move to Amend Coalition to represent advocacy efforts for diverse communities on Long Island. All the organizations share in common the senator’s reluctance to meet with each group. The organizations have invited the Senator to the forum, and have demanded transparency and representation in State politics.
LITAC’s Executive Director Juli Grey-Owens states “The Long Island Transgender Advocacy Coalition stands with other members of this coalition because we believe there are significant social issues which are being ignored by our political leaders. As we fight for Transgender Civil Rights, we cannot ignore the plight of our homeless, the unfortunate conditions undocumented families face every day, and the lack of public transportation which affects Long Islanders as they fight to earn a living wage. We believe it is time for all of us to join together and change this cycle of discrimination, hate and abuse. We urge Senator Flanagan to meet with us.”
According to a recent New York Post report, New York State ranks the highest in political corruption in the entire country. The advocates push for transparency echoes longstanding criticism of the secretive budget proceedings and lack of accountability towards constituents.
