(Long Island, NY) A bill extending the striped bass season to December 31st of each calendar year has passed the New York State Senate on May 21, reports Senator Kenneth P. LaValle. The bill, if enacted, would extend the striped bass season that currently ends on December 15 each year.
“Fishing regulations, changes in water temperature, seasonal migration patterns, and weather events and patterns have all had a negative impact on New York’s commercial fishing industry,” Senator LaValle said.
“Hurricane Sandy taught us that extreme weather events can damage fishing infrastructure, further financially cripple our fisherman, and force migrating fish out of the region. Extending the striped bass season to December 31 of each calendar year will help create jobs, boost the Long Island economy, and ensure that quotas can be reached even if affected by natural causes,” Senator LaValle said.
The bill will now be taken up by the Assembly.
