How Would Your Dog Vote? LOHV-LI says Suozzi and Madden
(Long Island, NY) A League of Humane Voters Long Island affiliate has formed and endorsed two animal advocates running for office on November 5th. The League of Humane Voters- Long Island (LOHV-LI) is a strictly non-partisan organization, endorsing candidates strictly on their expressed commitment to work with the organization on passing legislation to protect animals and on the strength of their electoral campaigns. As tough as it is to garner their endorsement, former Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi and Town of Hempstead Council-District 6 nominee Diane Madden have made the grade.

As former Nassau County Executive, Tom Suozzi transformed a municipal kill shelter into the humane, no-kill animal shelter known as the Animal Lovers’ League of Glen Cove. More recently, Suozzi has come out adamantly in support of A.740a/S.3753a, the recent New York State bill that will allow municipalities to regulate, control and manage the sale of animals by pet dealers, even hitting the streets last month with animal advocates across Long Island to ask Governor Cuomo to sign it into law. If elected again, Tom Suozzi has promised to take an unprecedented next step by forming a committee of reputable animal experts for the purpose of protecting animals, both wild and domestic, in Nassau County.

This platform is in stark contrast to Ed Mangano’s policies while in office, which animal advocates from Long Island Orchestrating for Nature (LION) and the League of Humane Voters- Long Island have condemned as flippant and dismissive. Perhaps most outrageous was his hosting of the Cole Bros. Circus, an organization currently on criminal probation for violation of the Endangered Species Act, at Eisenhower Park this past summer despite animal advocates bringing their criminal status and video evidence of abuse to his attention.
Hempstead Town Council-District 6 Nominee Diane Madden, co-founder of Hope for Hempstead Shelter Unlimited and an animal welfare advocate for ten years prior to entering politics, is responsible for accomplishing a full operational and financial audit of the Town of Hempstead animal shelter by the New York State Comptroller, exposing waste, abuse, and mismanagement in the process. When the Town Hall violated her rights and kept her out of the shelter, Diane fought back and won her lawsuit (Offer of Judgment – Madden vs Town of Hempstead – 2013). A proven advocate, Diane has promised that if elected she will continue fighting for the animals of Hempstead and for the people of her district as well, opening every Hempstead agency to an independent audit to restore the public’s confidence in their elected officials and improve their quality of life while protecting suburbia.

Long Island is full of animal advocates, and regardless of party affiliation, Long Island needs to show this in their votes to help animals on the Island.
If you care about animals, the League of Humane Voters- Long Island asks you to please vote for Tom Suozzi and Diane Madden come November, and please tell all of your friends to do the same.
“With your help, we can create a more humane Long Island.” –John Di Leonardo, Chair, League of Humane Voters-Long Island.
