(Binghamton, NY) The following statement was released today by State Senator Thomas W. Libous:
“The Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance’s recent action was an attempt to preserve federal funding. Responsible EBT reform means preventing individuals from legally swiping their EBT cards to purchase beer or cigarettes at grocery and convenience stores.
Responsible EBT reform needs more accountability than internal policy changes – it needs the force of law. Without that, enforcement is practically impossible.
This issue not only affects OTDA, but also the State Liquor Authority and the State Gaming Commission. We urge the state Assembly to join us in strengthening these policies and penalties in the State Budget to make sure the taxpayer dollars for public assistance go to people who need it.”
