(Long Island, NY) Light the World Foundation in partnership with Brooklyn State Senator Jesse Hamilton announces a special day and celebratory occasion to provide a culturally rich and entertaining experience to the community featuring artists Limage Pierre, Roosevelt Jean Noel and Jonathan Laurince. Light the World Foundation will hosts its Fifth Annual Music and Arts Festival on August 1st at 6:00 PM. The performances will take place at Waverly School of the Arts P.S. 156 at 104 Sutter Avenue Brooklyn NY (Corner of Legion Street). Also in attendance and being honored that evening are the 2015 Light the World Scholarship Award Recipients.
Light the World Foundation’s annual concerts have offered opportunities for musicians and young people to display their talent, create a summer recreational activity for the community while bringing awareness to the cause of education. All backgrounds, race, ethnicities, religions and nationalities are welcome to participate. This year our concert will be done in partnership with the office of Senator Jesse Hamilton who has been a strong advocate in Albany before and after taking office. He has been a champion of community reconstruction, human rights and educational achievement. Our co-sponsors also include the likes of the Haitian American Caucus, New York Students Rising, Cody Cares and many churches spread across the five boroughs of New York City.
It is a fitting time to raise awareness to the need for standard and high quality education for students in the New York City area and Haiti. The funds from our fundraising activities are directed towards two distinct programs:
- Light the World Scholars: students are awarded yearly full-tuition scholarships in Haiti and up to $3,000 in the US to help cover education expenses and
- Youth Empowerment Mentoring: Workshops, Seminars and Webinars hosted with various guests to empower youth and inspire intentional action to ensure their success.
Just as an example of our work, Light the World Foundation has disbursed over $60,000 to help victims of the January 2010 earthquake and to educate children in six schools, each in a different community, in Haiti.
During this year’s concert, we will present our two US scholarship award recipients who have successfully demonstrated themselves to be academically exceptional students who are heavily involved in their community and school extracurricular activities as well as demonstrated financial need. The monetary award can be used to pay for tuitions, books, or other school necessities. This is our first class of scholarship recipients. The plan is for these trailblazers to serve as mentors and guiding figures for younger students encouraging them to apply for our next round of scholarship award and other available scholarships.
This year’s concert includes longtime Haitian Stars Roosevelt Jean Noel, Jonathan Laurince, Limage Pierre, Pè Selom, as well as the Berean Community Drumline and a spoken word piece by upcoming star Zoe Sumner. A truly amazing line up that is sure to bring joy and community pride to the hearts of the attendees.
