(Long Island, NY) The Humane Society of the United States has claimed a Long Island couple as their Valentines this Valentine’s Day.
Awarded for their part in passing New York’s recent Puppy Mill Bill, John Di Leonardo, 25, of Malverne, and Julie Cappiello, 22, of Wantagh, have received an Advocates We Love Award from the Humane Society of the United States for their active social media, lobbying efforts, and large Bellmore pet store protest last year.

The Puppy Mill Bill, now a law, restores local municipalities their right to regulate pet stores and puppy mills, ensuring adequate protection for both consumers and animals.
The couple, who run Long Island Orchestrating for Nature (LION), Long Island’s largest animal advocacy organization, can be seen with their rescued dog Bella on the HSUS’ Facebook, and attached, with a thank you from the national group. Attached is a photograph of a plaque they received as well.
