(Long Island, NY) Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano and Acting Police Commissioner Thomas Krumpter will honor newly promoted Sergeant Mohit Arora at a special ceremony today, November 5th at 2p.m. in Mineola.
On August 14, 2013 at 1:54 a.m., Sgt. Arora along with other officers from the third precinct responded to a New Hyde Park home, where home owners had called 911 because they heard odd noises in their home. When confronted by Police Officers, one of the defendants Cong Xu, 21 of Brooklyn fled the home and fired several rounds from a handgun. One of the bullets struck, Police Officer Arora in the pelvis and hip. The other defendant Renhang Qiu was located and taken into custody nearby.
Police Officer Arora was transported and admitted to North Shore Hospital where he was treated for his severe injuries. After a lengthy recovery and rehabilitation process, Officer Arora returned to unrestricted duty as a patrol officer with the third precinct. He then studied and took the Department’s highly competitive Sergeant’s Exam, scored extremely well and was thus promoted to the rank of Sergeant on October 19, 2015.
Defendants:
- Renhang Qiu, 24, of Brooklyn, was sentenced yesterday to seven years in prison plus five years of post-release supervision by Acting Nassau Supreme Court Justice Philip Grella. Qiu pleaded guilty in May 2014 to Burglary in the 1st Degree.
- Cong Xu, 22, of Brooklyn, was sentenced on June 9th to 30 years in prison by Justice Philip Grella. Xu pleaded guilty in April to Assault in the 1st Degree (a B violent felony) and Burglary in the 1st Degree (a B violent felony).
Background on Sgt. Arora: From 2004 to 2007 Sgt. Arora was a Police Officer for the New York City Police Department. He was appointed to the Nassau County Police Department on November 2, 2007, and was assigned to the 3rd Precinct on May 20, 2008. Since being with the Nassau County Police Department he has been awarded a Medal of Distinguished Service, the Purple Heart and in July of 2015 he received the Theodore Roosevelt Association Police Valor Award.
