(Long Island, NY) Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano today announced that Dr. John E. Imhof, Commissioner of the Nassau County Department of Social Services, has been elected unanimously by his 57 fellow commissioners as 2nd Vice President of the New York Public Welfare Association (NYPWA).

Dr. Imhof, who was appointed DSS Commissioner in 2006, formerly served as 3rd Vice President and two terms as the Long Island representative for NYPWA. NYPWA represents the 58 county Departments of Social Services in New York State committed to improving the quality and effectiveness of social welfare policy for New York’s citizens. In addition to working collaboratively with all counties statewide, NYPWA also provides information and technical assistance to federal, state, and local policy makers.
“Dr. Imhof continues to bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to both the New York Public Welfare Association and the Nassau County Department of Social Services,” said County Executive Mangano. “He is dedicated to the Department’s mission, which involves strengthening and preserving families. His leadership at DSS during these tough economic times has been a tremendous benefit both to staff and the residents of Nassau County.”
Sheila Harrigan, Executive Director of the New York Public Welfare Association, stated “As one of the State’s longest serving DSS Commissioners, I am pleased that Dr. Imhof will continue to play a vital role in furthering the goals of the Public Welfare Association in addressing the many serious issues faced by the neediest of residents in Nassau County and throughout the State.”
Dr. Imhof has an extensive background in public service, health care administration and education. Dr. Imhof holds a doctorate in Psychology and master’s degrees in Social work, Health Care Administration and Education Prior to being appointed Commissioner of DSS, he served as Commissioner of the Nassau County Department of Drug and Alcohol Addiction following 32 years as an administrator with the North Shore – LIJ Health System. He is an Adjunct Professor of Social Work at LIU Post and in 2010 was also appointed by County Executive Mangano as Chairperson of the County Executive’s Task Force on Family Violence.
