(Mineola, NY) Nassau County Comptroller George Maragos officially announced his bid for re-election last night at a well-attended fundraiser. Maragos spoke of his impressive record of accomplishments as Comptroller and outlined his vision for the next four years. His achievements included making County government smaller and more efficient, cutting $300 million in waste and fraud, reducing borrowing, and helping to hold the line on property taxes for three consecutive years. Maragos also focused on and has helped to improve the Assessment System. The result is that Nassau County is no longer the highest taxed county in the state, local business is booming and the County unemployment rate has dipped to one of the lowest in the region at 5.8 percent.
Maragos also outlined his vision for the next four years to address the financial challenges facing the County. Maragos stressed the importance of continuing to protect residents from “tax hikes”, continuing to stimulating the economy and create jobs; his determination to continue rooting out waste and fraud in government in order to hold the line on spending, the need to get moving and rebuild the Coliseum into an exciting destination of sports, entertainment and convention center that Nassau County would be proud of, and to be an advocate for the investment in infrastructure to reduce traffic congestion and improve public transportation throughout Nassau County and into the City.
Maragos insisted during his speech that the County cannot afford to return to the tax and spend policies of the Suozzi-Weitzman Administration, who together nearly bankrupted the County by leaving behind a $250 million structural deficit, depleted reserves, accumulated over $3 Billion in debt and left a broken Assessment System which paid out $115 million in tax refunds to attorney firms, including the law firm of Suozzi’s father.
