(Long Island, NY) Senator Jack M. Martins (R-C-I, Mineola) today announced that legislation (S.5646) he sponsors that would allow local governments to donate surplus computer equipment to schools, libraries and not-for-profit organizations has passed the Senate.
The bill provides a three-year extender, until July 1, 2016, to the current law which regulates the donation of computer equipment and will allow local governments to continue to recycle their surplus computer equipment through donations to community groups.
“To date, hundreds of computers have been donated to local schools, libraries and other not-for-profit organizations,” said Senator Martins. “These groups are always looking for ways to fill their technology needs in the most economical way. Donations can fill major gaps. This bill would help reduce the number of computers they actually have to buy. It provides a great option for cash strapped districts and community groups and, at the same time, allows local governments to reduce their electronic waste and support technology in education.”
The bill will be sent to the Governor for approval.
