Each year, Foreword Reviews shines a light on a select group of indie publishers, university presses, and self-published authors whose work stands out from the crowd.
With a panel of 100 volunteer librarians and booksellers, a decision will be made to determine the winners in 63 different categories based on their experience with readers and patrons.
“After 17 years, our awards program has become synonymous with quality because our editors set such a high bar on the finalists round, which makes it especially tough for the judges who select the winners,” said Victoria Sutherland, publisher of the Foreword Reviews. “In every genre, our judges will find an interesting, high quality selection of books culled from this year’s entries.”
Last syllable Books is very proud to have published a work of literature that is distinct, compelling and provocative. They have set out to produce well-written, appealing books which will leave readers to be inspired by what they read.
In addition to this honor, MELT has won the Society of Children’s Book Writers & Illustrators’ spark award. MELT is being awarded an Independent Publisher’s IPPY Bronze Medal for Young Adult literature, as well as another major prize to be revealed at Book Expo America. MELT is also the Eric Hoffer Book Award first runner up in Young Adult fiction, and a finalists for the Da Vinci Eye Award for cover art.
Forward Reviews will celebrate the winners during a program of the American Library Association Annual Conference in San Francisco on Friday, June 26 at 6 P.M. at the Pop Top Stage in exhibit hall. Everyone is welcome to come. The Editor’s Choice Prize for Fiction, Nonfiction, and Foreword Reviews’ 2014 INDIEFAB Publisher of the Year Award will also be announced during the presentation.
MELT, which is based on true events, is both a chilling tale of abuse and a timeless romance. MELT will hit you like a slap in the face, following a brutal love story you will seep through the crack in your sole.
MELT, set up against the backdrop of the Wizard of Oz. Sixteen year old “good girl” Dorothy just blew into the small town of Highland Park – where the social headquarters is Munchkinland (Dunkin’ Donuts.) There, she meets Joey – a “bad boy” who tells no one about the catastrophic domestic violence he witnesses at home. Can these two lovers survive peer pressure, Joey’s reputation, and alcoholism? Hiding behind this breathtaking drama, Joey has a secret about his family- about to be unleashed.
Told in dual first person, Joey’s words are scattered on the page – reflecting his broken state. Dorothy is the voice of reason – until something so shattering happens that she, too, may lose her grip. Can their love endure, or will it melt away?
“Dorothy and Joey’s plight is both an inner and outer struggle, a reckoning with a cold world, and a psychological drama about the stakes of truth-telling that ends with a gratifying act of mercy… A fresh, emotionally complex bildungsroman of young American love that looks long and hard at violence, and at what can over-come it.”
-Kirkus Review.
“Melt is an evocative, emotional, vivid and powerful. Beautiful, painful, and ultimately healing, Melt is a gripping read that will make you feel and care about the characters.” Cheryl Rainfield, award-winning author of Scars and Stained
