Bill would close the Gap Elimination Adjustment (GEA) within two years
(Long Island, NY) Assemblyman Michael Montesano (R,I,C-Glen Head) is co-sponsoring legislation to fully fund our schools by closing the Gap Elimination Adjustment (GEA), the controversial $10 billion education cuts from 2010 that devastated schools’ budgets across the state. Since that time, only a portion of this funding has been restored to our education system. If enacted, Assembly bill 8712 would close half of this multi-billion dollar education deficit in time for next school year, and close it completely by the start of the 2015-16 school year
“Since 2010, our school districts have felt the squeeze due to the massive cuts enacted,” said Montesano. “The governor has promised to restore this funding and close the Gap Elimination Adjustment, but it hasn’t happened. I’m proud to sponsor legislation that would restore this funding completely to our fiscally-distressed schools before the start of the next school year, and restore it for all schools within two years.
“With Common Core, teacher evaluations and other additional costs to schools, this restoration cannot come soon enough. I urge both the Senate and Assembly to act on this legislation immediately so our schools have the proper funding to provide our children with the top-notch education they deserve.”
