(Long Island, NY) Assemblyman Michael Montesano (R,C,I-Glen Head) is co-sponsoring bi-partisan legislation (A.3536-A) that would increase penalties against dangerous drivers.
This legislation will provide stricter penalties for drivers who cause serious injury or death while knowingly operating a vehicle unlicensed or with a revoked license. If serious injury is caused under these conditions the driver would be charged with a class E felony and in the event someone is killed the driver would be charged with a class D felony.
“It’s plain and simple; drivers who have multiple traffic safety violations should lose their privilege to be out on the open road,” said Montesano. “This legislation would punish drivers who have caused serious injury to others because of their reckless driving. We need to pass this legislation to let these individuals know their dangerous habits will not be tolerated anymore.”
In New York State, 10 percent of all crashes are caused by drivers with suspended or revoked licenses and 75 percent of those drivers will get behind the wheel again.
