A statement from Assemblyman Michael Montesano (R,I,C-Glen Head)
(Long Island, NY) “This is the second consecutive week that the Majority has introduced what they consider to be necessary reforms pertaining to ethics and legislative operations. I am pleased to see that some of our conference’s recommendations, such as, broadcasting committee meetings and increasing public access to committee votes and roll calls are outlined in the final resolution.
“However, they have left a lot on the table by focusing on miniscule changes to legislative operations, rather than measures that would address the root of the problem: absolute power. To improve the function of our government we must adopt term limits for legislative leaders and committee chairs, ensure equal staff allocations to all members and allow legislation with overwhelming support to reach the Assembly floor. These are the real solutions that we need to stimulate long-term changes to the status quo.
“Our conference has rolled out countless common-sense proposals to rid the corruption that has infiltrated the Capitol – and here we are once again taking a half-hearted step forward. Instead, we should be adopting non-partisan measures that rightfully revitalize the Legislature and ensure a fair set of standards to increase accountability and transparency within our chamber.”
